Our PE programme aims to promote a healthy lifelong love of sport and healthy lifestyles which helps to develop the physical, social, and emotional wellbeing of all our students. We work hard to provide an engaging and challenging curriculum that allows students to achieve their potential and beyond.
Building on the overall school ethos, we develop students into lifelong learners who can face the demands of the future with confidence. Our curriculum offers our students opportunities to work with confidence as leaders and to play roles within a team whilst developing their practical, technical, and tactical understanding of sport. Throughout the key stages, students are encouraged to take on additional roles in leasson - as leaders, captains, and coaches - to develop their confidence and leadership skills. Within the curriculum, students will explore a wide range of sports with many transferable skills. The curriculum covers the aesthetics of dance, gymnastics, and trampolining; invasion games; striking and fielding games; netball and wall games; health related fitness; planning and leading; and outdoor adventurous activities.
We trust that our broad and innovative PE curriculum will allow students to develop their love of movement and sport well beyond their time with us. We aim to ensure that students leave college with the knowledge and motivation to enjoy a lifelong engagement with sport and healthy living.
During Key Stage 3 students gain an understanding of health and fitness, developing their knowledge of the muscular and skeletal systems as well as training methods and principles, to help prepare them for Key Stage 4 option choices.
In year 7, students focus on developing their basic skill level in a wide range of sports and on improving their physical, social, and emotional wellbeing by engaging in those physical activities.
In year 8, students will build on the basic practical skills learned in year 7 and further develop their understanding of the rules and positioning in sport.
In year 9, students will develop their tactical and strategic understanding. The development of students' physical literacy is key, with assessment on the attitudes, skills, and knowledge required to become, healthy and successful people through PE.
In years 10 and 11, students in core PE will continue to develop their confidence, motivation, physical competence, knowledge and understanding so that they value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life. This is achieved by ensuring lessons are both engaging and purposeful.
Students choosing Health and Fitness as an option will study a vocational qualification in sport, equivalent to one GCSE. They will be assessed on: anatomy and physiology; fitness training and testing; and their ability to develop a fitness programme. This is all achieved by teaching theoretical content through and alongside high-quality practical PE.
Students have the opportunity to attend after-school clubs to further develop their skills in a wide range of sports. The school is represented in a large, competitive extracurricular calendar across the Pendle district.
