We expect a very high standard of punctuality and expect all pupils to be in line up by 8.30 am and progress tutors escort pupils to check-in for 8.35am. If a pupil is going to be absent, we expect communication from a parent/carer before 8.30am.
With regards to medical appointments parents/carers should try to make all appointments outside college hours unless in an emergency. We aim for all pupils to achieve at least 97% attendance, missing as few sessions as possible – preferably none at all!
The college does not encourage any kind of leave, including for holidays, during term time as it is proven that poor attendance has a direct correlation with reduced academic attainment. All parents/carers requesting any kind of leave during term time must contact the Attendance Officer and arrange an appointment to discuss this.
We feel that the key to success with attendance is to work with parents/carers. We welcome parents/carers to come into the college to meet with the relevant Head of Year to discuss any issues with regards to attendance/punctuality and to discuss any concerns they may have and together find solutions to support the child and family. We have a Family Liaison Officer, Ms Khan and she can be contacted through the main office on 01282 683060
We believe that all pupils who excel with regards to attendance should be rewarded. We implement a reward scheme including certificates and prizes at the end of the college year and an award for each progress group in each year that has the highest attendance. Pupils who are unable to achieve 100% due to many different circumstances are also included in attendance rewards.
You may be aware that the Department for Education has recently announced national changes to penalty notices issued for unauthorised absence in term time. These changes will come into effect on 19 August 2024. The below documents expalin what changes will come into force from September 2024.
