As your child begins the important process of choosing their Key Stage 4 subjects, we would like to share key information about the upcoming events that will support them in making informed and thoughtful decisions.
At Marsden Heights Community College, we believe that students achieve best when they select subjects that align with their strengths, interests, and aspirations. Our guided pathways system helps ensure that every student follows a curriculum that offers the right balance of challenge, enjoyment, and future opportunity.
To support families fully, we are holding two key events:
Wednesday 15th April 4:15pm – 6pm
This evening will provide an opportunity for students and families to:
• Learn more about the KS4 pathways (Aspire, Ignite and Thrive)
• Know which pathway students have been suggested to follow
• Explore the subjects available
• Understand the structure of the options process
• Speak with teachers about course content, assessment methods and progression routes
• Meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team for personalised guidance
This event is designed to help students start considering which subjects best reflect what they enjoy, what they excel at, and where they hope to progress after Year 11. The evening will begin with an options presentation by the Principal Mr Delve at 4:30pm.
Wednesday 29th April 4pm – 7pm
Parents’ Evening will allow you to discuss your child’s progress across all subjects and gather valuable insight into their strengths, learning habits and potential areas of success at KS4.
During this evening, you will again meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team to review and confirm your child's option choices.
This ensures decisions are:
• Well informed
• Realistic and ambitious
• Aligned with your child's pathway
• Supportive of their long-term goals
Our aim is to work in partnership with you to secure the best possible curriculum for your child.
Throughout the process, your child will also receive guidance through:
• Assemblies
• Progress Tutor sessions
• Classroom discussions
• Conversations with teaching staff and pastoral teams
They will be encouraged to reflect on:
• What they enjoy
• What they are good at
• Which subjects motivate them
• How different choices link to future courses, apprenticeships, or careers
We encourage families to begin these conversations at home too.
Further information about subjects, pathways and the options process will be provided at the Options Evening Wednesday 15th April. Please attend both events, as they play a crucial role in ensuring your child makes confident, well-informed choices about their future.
