At Marsden Heights Community College. everyone matters, and everyone is safe, seen and included. Our ‘everyone’ includes an ever-growing number of pupils seeking sanctuary from global catastrophes, such as war, persecution, and environmental disasters. We welcome these pupils and their families and place them at the heart of our diverse community, comprising 30 different countries of origin (and counting!).
A School of Sanctuary is a school that has received a Sanctuary Award from City of Sanctuary UK in recognition of its good practice in fostering a culture of welcome, belonging and solidarity for those seeking safety. We are passionate about achieving the School of Sanctuary Award and have been learning , embedding and sharing our way to accreditation for two years now.
In this rapidly changing world, our young people navigate a daily gauntlet of hostile media bias and misconception concerning people who are refugees or asylum seekers. Our College, is a microcosmic society where difference is celebrated and there is a welcome for all: One World as One Family. Our young people will soon be the adults who will model this beyond our gates.
Visitors comment on the warmth and enthusiasm they feel when they are with us. Our pupils will be able to tell you in 22 different home languages! Celebration of home culture and maintenance of home languages are part of our vibrant everyday life here... Just take a look at our flags in the atrium, pop into a lesson and see children using their home language to hook in prior knowledge. Or visit us on Culture Day or during Refugee Week!
We can’t wait to share the news with you when Marsden Heights becomes a School of Sanctuary. Wish us luck!
