Intent: The curriculum is taught in a way to best prepare students for the final GCSE exam. The first term in Year 10 is based on non-examined units looking at the basic terminology and key concepts of sociology, moving on to research methods after September. This content is not directly examined but students are expected to apply these concepts to their answers in assessments. In terms 2 and 3 of Year 10 we cover the family and education, which makes up 100% of Paper 1 and 50% of the final grade. In terms 1 and 2 of Year 11 we cover crime and deviance and social stratification, found on Paper 2, with term 3 available for catch-up and revision.
Lessons allow students to answer exam-style questions throughout and questions have success criteria to aid answers. Literacy skills feature highly in every lesson as does numeracy when analysing data. We support English by using PEEL paragraphs to structure answers. Following on from the lockdown period, all sociology lessons and resources are now online and accessible to students to allow them to catch up or complete work at home if not in lesson. A full set of revision materials for each unit as well as knowledge organisers is also accessible to all.
