We offer support to students of all abilities across the college who have additional English language learning requirements.
On admission to MHCC, new arrivals are given an initial assessment using the Lancashire Profile for Monitoring Pupil Progress. This gives the college a baseline from where we can personalise a flexible support plan for the student. An additional Literacy and Numeracy assessment is also completed so each student can be placed appropriately in English and Mathematics.
In the first instance, students may be withdrawn from mainstream classes for concentrated English language tuition individually, in pairs or small groups, thereafter, we provide in class support wherever possible.
We work closely with our colleagues in the Student Progress Centre to provide our EAL learners with a safe, positive, flexible learning experience.
An After-School EAL Club offers students the opportunity to have help with their homework or with reading or simply the chance to relax, practice their English and make friends.
