Taste of Transformation Community Iftar Tammy Quinn / 10 March 2026 / Categories: General Last week, the spirit of togetherness, creativity, and cultural celebration filled the Unity Wellbeing Centre as over sixty community members gathered for a special Community Iftar, prepared by Marsden Heights’ Youthworks in the Kitchen, Mums2Mums, and even Principal Mr Delve, offering a helping hand! The evening began with a lively communal cooking session. Using ingredients sourced entirely from local suppliers, attendees worked side by side to prepare a feast featuring flavourful chicken shawarma, homemade hummus, tzatziki, and zhoug, freshly baked Turkish bread from Sahaba, vibrant seasonal salads, fresh fruit and dates, and a beautifully crafted cake to mark the occasion The Iftar was opened with a Dua (opening prayer) led by one of the young people, the lively room fell silent for a moment of reflection. It was then time to break fast, with everyone eating together, followed by conversation, laughter and ending in communal song. One attendee commented: “Thank you everyone for creating a great atmosphere, I loved it - a proper iftaar with all involved in every part of the cooking, eating, singing and cleaning.” The special event is a part of a monthly themed programme from Dana Olarescu’s Taste of Transformation artist residency, which brings the FOOD Nelson manifesto to life across the town through shared meals, collaborative cooking, and imaginative food experiences. Youth Works, a group of young people from Marsden Heights, have been hosting community meals for several months, each one growing in success. These community meals will continue on the third Thursday of every month. Previous Article Year 9 S.T.E.A.M Festival
