Employer Engagement Experience at XLCR Tammy Quinn / 04 March 2025 / Categories: General On 27th February, a Year 10 group were invited to XLCR Vehicle Management; this was an opportunity for an employer encounter for the pupils and proved to be a valuable day of careers learning. The visit, held at XLCR’s offices, was an opportunity for pupils to gain insight into the inner workings of the business while also learning about career pathways, the value of apprenticeships, and essential skills for the workplace. The day began with a welcome introduction to the company and a tour of the premises. This helped them understand the various departments and operations within the business. Pupils were able to ask questions and engage with staff members, especially apprentices, about their career journeys, the roles they play within the business and how they contribute to the business’ success. The most popular and insightful activity of the day was when pupils focused on identifying key skills and building a strong CV. This activity provided a practical introduction to what employers look for in potential candidates and allowed pupils to reflect on their own strengths and skills. However, the highlight for most was the second part of the activity where they were tasked with interviewing CV applicants for a fictional job role. They choose two candidates, conducted face-to-face interviews, and offered the job to the most successful applicant. This hands-on exercise allowed them to practice their communication skills, gain confidence in an interview setting, and understand the decision-making process from an employer’s perspective. Mrs Ross, Careers Lead at Marsden Heights, said: “The day has been a huge success and enjoyed by staff at XLCR, pupils and school staff. It was clear that XLCR care about their team and the progression of their apprentices but also how they contribute to the local community. Thank you for welcoming Marsden Heights’ pupils.” Pupils took the time to reflect and feedback on the day, and their insights were excellent: “We learnt about the importance of being confident and the different job roles in a business.” “It was a fun day and I learnt about what to put on a CV. Thank you for having us!” “The staff at XLCR were very welcoming.” “The day helped think about my future. I learnt about what a broker does and the different jobs at XLCR.” “I know now that I would like to find out more about apprenticeships on offer.” “I feel that I would be more confident in an interview situation now.” “Thanks for having us, it has been a good experience!” Tracey Whalley, Operations Director at XLCR was impressed by the students' engagement and enthusiasm throughout the day. She added: “The pupils were fab; I really enjoyed it, and they were an absolute credit to the school.” Previous Article Marsden Heights Welcomes Gold Medallist Paralympian Gregg Stevenson Next Article Introduction to Higher Education
