Shaping the Future of our Library Tammy Quinn / 11 November 2025 / Categories: General On 24th October, Student Librarians from Marsden Heights Community College embarked on a fact-finding mission to Nelson Library, aiming to discover new ways to enhance our own school library. The students were warmly welcomed by librarian Deborah Stevenson, who gave them a comprehensive tour of the library. She explained how books are organised using both fiction and non-fiction systems, and demonstrated key library tasks such as reserving books, locating titles, and preparing public orders. Students were also introduced to BorrowBox, an online platform for borrowing e-books, and were given the opportunity to join the library and take books on loan. Deborah later emailed to say how impressed she was with the students’ enthusiasm and engagement - a proud moment for our school! The visit sparked many ideas for improving our own library. Students plan to introduce the Dewey Decimal System for non-fiction books, expand our non-fiction collection to cover a wider range of topics and create a Student Librarian Recommendation Section to highlight books chosen by our Librarians for their peers. Mrs Guest, Literacy Coach at Marsden Heights said: “It was a truly inspiring visit that will help shape the future of our school library. Thank you to Nelson Library for hosting us!” Well done to our fantastic team, Ellie and Maryam (Year 7), Gabriel (Year 8), Hashir (Year 9), and Zakirullah (Year 10), who represented the school brilliantly.
