Defenders of the Planet Tammy Quinn / 01 April 2025 / Categories: General On 24th March, 25 Year 8 pupils embarked on the first step of their Extraordinary Minds journey at Nelson and Colne College, alongside other local schools. This initiative aims to challenge and inspire pupils, providing them with experiences that will develop their skills and knowledge in preparation for their transition to Sixth Form College. The focus of the day was to explore how human activity is impacting the planet and to devise a campaign to Defend the Planet. Pupils participated in lectures that delivered high-level knowledge and information, pitched at A-Level standard, giving them a taste of advanced learning. Following these sessions, they engaged in a planning session to create their campaigns. Pupils presented their campaigns to the whole group and teachers, showcasing their creativity, research, and problem-solving skills. The top three campaigns were selected and rewarded with prizes, celebrating their exceptional efforts. This marks the beginning of the Extraordinary Minds journey for these pupils. As they progress through Years 9, 10, and 11, they will continue to develop their skills portfolio through various experiences and challenges, ensuring they are well-prepared for their future academic and professional endeavours. Mrs. Burgoyne, More Able Lead, said: “It was a super event with some excellent outcomes. Pupils undertook some awesome research to add to their presentation. Skill building is an essential part of the Extraordinary Minds programme.” Student feedback was equally enthusiastic, with comments such as: “Awesome day out, the teaching was next level - I learnt so much.” “I'm looking forward to what comes next in Year 9.” This event has set the stage for an exciting and enriching journey ahead for these high-achieving pupils, equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to excel in their future studies.
