Community Connections Tammy Quinn / 10 June 2025 / Categories: General Marsden Heights is proud to be working in partnership with the CUE Foundation on Community Connections, a new initiative funded by a community cohesion grant. Led by Zaheer Abbas and Nahman Asghar from CUE, the project aims to empower our young people while strengthening bonds across diverse communities. The dedicated group of 16 students in the Year 10 Youthworks Committee, have committed to the project, which runs from May to July. Through a series of engaging workshops, students are exploring themes such as resilience, cohesion, volunteering, befriending, and tackling social issues. These after-school sessions are held every Thursday at Unity Hall, Nelson, and students actively participate in discussing a different theme each week. In addition to workshops, students also take part in weekly Sunday community walks. Each student has been encouraged to bring along a friend, family member, or someone from the local area to enjoy the outdoors, connect with nature, and strengthen community ties. These walks continue to grow in popularity, with over 50 people joining the strolls. The project will culminate in a reflection and celebration event later this summer, bringing together everyone involved to share their experiences and gather feedback. The core aims of Community Connections are to: Bring people together from all backgrounds, faiths, and cultures through shared goals such as volunteering and mentoring. Equip the community with tools to challenge social issues. Strengthen local partnerships that build lasting community resilience. Boost young people's confidence and trust in connecting with others. Mr Mashuq Hussain OBE, Senior Youth and Community Worker, said: “The aim is to see a ripple effect; empowering these young people to bring positive change to the community and grow the impact of this project.” Marsden Heights is incredibly proud of our students' commitment and looks forward to seeing the lasting difference they will make through this inspiring initiative.
